The School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS) offers 6 undergraduate programs, namely Chinese Language & Literature, Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Language, Journalism, History, Social Work, and Secretarial Science. Currently, there are 79 faculty and staff members, of whom 7 are professors, 17 are associate professors, over 75% hold master/doctor degree. There are also professors-in-residence from renowned universities like Peking University, China Agricultural University, Jilin University, and Shanghai International Studies University.

History, Chinese Language & Literature, and Social Work are three programs selected as Provincial Featured Constructive Programs; the teaching teams of History and Modern and Contemporary Chinese Literature are awarded as provincial “Excellent Teaching Teams”; Ancient World History and Contemporary Chinese Literature are selected as provincial “Excellent Courses”. In recent years, 3 national social science projects including Study of Religious Beliefs of Hainan Ethnic Minority Groups, and over 30 provincial research projects have been approved; over 70 textbooks and 1000 papers have been published including over 100 core-journal papers. SHSS has achieved success in social studies, especially in the field of Hainan ethnic studies which wins advantage in the province.

The experiment center of SHSS has 13 labs including Putonghua Education and Assessment Lab, Chinese Language Lab, Electronic News Gathering & Editing Lab, and Social Work Lab, with a total covering area of 660 square metres and asset of over 3 million yuan. SHSS has established cooperative relations with Hainan Institute of Nationality Studies, Hainan Third Center for Re-education through Labor & addiction Treatment, Sanya Daily, and Sanya Vocational Technical School, with the purpose to strengthen practical teaching and cultivate application-oriented talents. Relying on Social Work Talents Training Bases both by Ministry of Civil Affairs and Hainan Province, Hainan Nationalities Research Base, Hainan Literature Base, SHSS endeavors to build sound platforms for the development its programs.

In recent years, 4 students have published novels or poem collections during college years, and over 40 students were admitted as postgraduate students by renowned universities including Beijing Normal University, Nanjing University and Xiamen University. Moreover, many students have won different awards in the national/provincial level competitions or activities.
